UNIVERSITAS is a permanent FP3NEWS column with a simple architecture: each issue takes one institution — a university, a university hospital, a research body — and reads its verified figures; presents one text — a book, a treatise, a scientific paper, ancient or current — that came out of that intellectual tradition; and, from the next issues, gives space to one scholar’s work: a monograph, an edition, a published paper. No league-table theatre: sourced numbers, dated, and the thought behind them.
The premise is not neutral, and we state it: the European university and the public hospital that teaches remain among the few institutions on this continent that still produce public knowledge on public money, at a fraction of the American cost. Their rankings are lower; their ratio of output to expenditure is not. UNIVERSITAS legge le istituzioni pubbliche europee che producono e trasmettono sapere — atenei, ospedali universitari, enti di ricerca — sui loro dati verificati: un’istituzione, un testo, uno studioso. Il nome non è una restrizione: universitas, nel latino dei fondatori, indica una corporazione, un corpo — l’ateneo era la universitas magistrorum et scholarium. Il perimetro è il sapere pubblico, non la sola aula. La rubrica non contiene previsioni, criteri di riscontro o voci di registro, e non è il prodotto d’inchiesta della testata: l’inchiesta è PULSE INSIDER, con criteri e falsificatori propri. Non esistono eccezioni interne: quando una situazione richiede l’inchiesta, il pezzo nasce lì e non qui. Dove il Direttore ha un rapporto personale in corso con un’istituzione — iscrizione, esame, candidatura, mobilità — UNIVERSITAS non ne fa oggetto della propria scelta editoriale finché quel rapporto dura: né ritratto istituzionale, né testo. Non è una cautela sul tono, è l’esclusione del soggetto. Il limite riguarda ciò che la redazione sceglie, non ciò che le viene proposto: «La Voce» resta aperta a chiunque, perché il lavoro di uno studioso non risponde dei rapporti di chi lo pubblica. Un rapporto concluso non rientra nel limite. È una regola sul soggetto che scrive, non un giudizio sulle istituzioni, e vale prima della pubblicazione anziché dopo.EN · Where the Director holds an ongoing personal relationship with an institution — enrolment, examination, application, mobility — UNIVERSITAS does not make it the object of its own editorial choice for as long as that relationship lasts: no institutional portrait, no text. This is exclusion of the subject, not caution about tone. The limit governs what the editor chooses, not what is submitted: “La Voce” stays open to all, because a scholar’s work does not answer for the relationships of whoever publishes it. A concluded relationship falls outside the limit. It is a rule about the writer, not a judgement on institutions, and it operates before publication rather than after.
Sorbonne Université was created on 1 January 2018 by merging Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV, letters) and Pierre-et-Marie-Curie (Paris VI, sciences and medicine): humanities and laboratories under one roof, in the Latin Quarter. Three faculties — Lettres, Santé, Sciences & Ingénierie — and, on the university’s own published figures, some 55,600 students, 10,200 of them international, 6,400 researchers and teaching researchers, 137 research units, 4,500 doctoral candidates across 24 doctoral schools, and 350,000 alumni.IT · Sorbonne Université nasce il 1° gennaio 2018 dalla fusione di Paris-Sorbonne (lettere) e Pierre-et-Marie-Curie (scienze e medicina): tre facoltà, circa 55.600 studenti di cui 10.200 stranieri, 6.400 fra ricercatori e docenti-ricercatori, 137 unità di ricerca, 4.500 dottorandi in 24 scuole dottorali.
Two facts sit oddly together, and the column reports both. The first: in the international ranking it still submits to, Sorbonne Université has been sliding — 63rd in QS 2025, 72nd in 2026, 73rd in the 2027 edition published on 18 June 2026. Ten places in three editions, in the wrong direction; in the 2026 edition Paris-Saclay overtook it as France’s third-ranked institution. The second: in September 2025 the university announced that from 2026 it would stop supplying data to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings altogether, framing the decision as part of its commitment to open science and to the reform of research assessment under the CoARA agreement and the Barcelona Declaration.
An institution that declines to be ranked, while its position in the surviving ranking falls, is not an obvious subject for a column that publishes ranking figures. It is precisely why it belongs here. UNIVERSITAS said in § 00 that it has no interest in league-table theatre; Sorbonne Université has gone further and walked off the stage of one table entirely, accepting the reputational cost of absence. Whether that is courage or insulation is a question this column does not pretend to settle. What can be said is narrower and firmer: a university that withdraws from a measure it considers badly built, and says so publicly, is exposing a judgement to contradiction rather than optimising a score. That is the same operation this outlet claims for itself, performed by an institution with far more to lose.IT · Due fatti convivono male e la rubrica li riporta entrambi. Nel ranking a cui ancora partecipa, l’ateneo scende: 63° nel QS 2025, 72° nel 2026, 73° nell’edizione 2027 del 18 giugno 2026. Dieci posizioni in tre edizioni, e nell’edizione 2026 Paris-Saclay lo ha superato come terzo ateneo francese. E dal 2026 ha smesso di fornire i dati al Times Higher Education, uscendo dal ranking in nome della scienza aperta, dell’accordo CoARA e della Dichiarazione di Barcellona. There is a third faculty, and it is the reason this column does not stop at lecture halls. Sorbonne Université’s Faculté de Santé is bound to the GHU AP-HP Sorbonne Université, formed in 2019 from the merger of two hospital groups and bringing together seven university hospitals — Pitié-Salpêtrière, Charles-Foix, Saint-Antoine, Rothschild, Tenon, Armand-Trousseau — with some 4,036 beds. Pitié-Salpêtrière alone spreads over ninety buildings and thirty-three hectares, with seventy-seven departments grouped in eleven divisions, and hosts research centres of international standing: the Paris Brain Institute and the IHU institute for cardiometabolism and nutrition.
Teaching, care and research in the same body is not an administrative curiosity: it is what the word in this column’s title originally meant. A universitas was a corporation, and the European public hospital that teaches is one of the last places where public money, public knowledge and public service are still visibly the same operation. That is the reason this column takes it as a subject — on its figures, at its own date, and with the same limits that apply to any other institution here.IT · C’è una terza facoltà, ed è la ragione per cui questa rubrica non si ferma alle aule. On 25 June 1903, in the Faculté des sciences de Paris, a thirty-five-year-old Polish woman defended a doctoral thesis of 142 pages before a jury that included Gabriel Lippmann, Édouard Bouty and Henri Moissan. It was registered as thesis no. 1127. That year, thirty-two doctorates in the sciences were awarded in all of France. The thesis is not a work of speculation. It is a measurement report: uranium rays quantified with an instrument built by her husband, the same behaviour hunted through other minerals, pitchblende found to be more active than its uranium content could explain, and from that anomaly the announcement of two new elements — polonium in July 1898, radium in December of the same year. The word she gave to the spontaneous emission, radioactivité, is hers. The claim that the phenomenon is atomic, a property of the element and not of a chemical arrangement, is hers too, and it is the one that changed physics.
It is worth holding the two objects side by side, because the column exists for this comparison. A ranking band is a position relative to other institutions in a given year, recomputed annually and gone by the next edition. A 142-page dissertation from 1903 is still read, still cited, still in print in bilingual editions, and the university that examined it now carries the examinee’s name on the faculty she never had access to as a student in her own country. Neither figure is worthless. From issue N°003, UNIVERSITAS reserves a permanent space to the work of the academic community. Three formats are considered:
