The 2026–27 Champions League league phase opened on 8 September with a statistic that deserves more attention than any single scoreline: eighteen matches, sixty-nine goals, an average of 3.83 per game. Only two of the eighteen ended level — Fenerbahçe 1–1 Roma and PSV Eindhoven 1–1 Shakhtar Donetsk. Sixteen produced a winner. Elite European football, so often described as a competition of control, began the season as a competition of consequences.

The headline results came from the usual places. Paris Saint-Germain beat Slovan Bratislava 6–1, Bayern Munich beat Bodø/Glimt 5–0, Barcelona beat Feyenoord 5–1 and Manchester United beat Sabah 4–0. Those are the scorelines of clubs with depth, rhythm and a clear gap in resources, and they should be read as such: they establish goal difference early, and in a thirty-six-team table goal difference is a currency.

The more instructive nights were the narrow ones. Real Madrid beat Inter 2–1. Liverpool beat Atlético Madrid by the same score. Arsenal won 1–0 at Napoli. Aston Villa won 3–2 at Club Brugge and Real Betis won 3–2 at Lille. In all, eight of the eighteen matches were decided by a single goal, and in the biggest of them the winner did not dominate ninety minutes; it controlled the decisive ten.

Away teams won five times — Villa, Manchester City at Porto, Betis, Arsenal and Lens — against eleven home wins. That ratio is a reminder that the format punishes clubs which treat a trip as a point-saving exercise. With only eight matches each and no long group-stage runway, one away win can move a club a long way up a thirty-six-team table.

After one round the table is a table of results, not a verdict. Paris and Bayern lead on goal difference, with Barcelona and Manchester United close behind. The next fixtures will test it quickly: on 13 and 14 October Manchester City host Paris Saint-Germain, Roma host Real Madrid, Arsenal host Lille and Galatasaray host Barcelona. Matchday One told us who started fast. Matchday Two begins to tell us who can keep that speed once the opposition has adapted.
