CHAMPIONS LEAGUE · MATCHDAY ONE REVIEW

Matchday One: The Giants Roar, the Challengers Answer Back

Sixty-nine goals in eighteen matches, sixteen decisive results and five away wins: the new league phase opened with less caution than the old order expected

BY IACOPO MUTASCIO · 7 OCTOBER 2026 · DIRETTORE RESPONSABILE (EDITOR-IN-CHIEF)

The 2026–27 Champions League league phase opened on 8 September with a statistic that deserves more attention than any single scoreline: eighteen matches, sixty-nine goals, an average of 3.83 per game. Only two of the eighteen ended level — Fenerbahçe 1–1 Roma and PSV Eindhoven 1–1 Shakhtar Donetsk. Sixteen produced a winner. Elite European football, so often described as a competition of control, began the season as a competition of consequences.
